"HERESIES: A Brief History of Christian Truth"

CLASS SYNOPSIS:

The word “heresy” carries a lot of history and deep emotion. We immediately think of those who were burned at the stake for heresy, and we become uncomfortable and prefer not to think or speak of such matters. The word “heresy” refers to any belief or theory that is strongly at variance with established beliefs or customs, particularly the accepted beliefs of the Church. Throughout Church history, there has been careful and prayerful study of scripture, vigorous debate and final agreement beginning with the Apostles and Paul, who in 48 AD addressed the Council in Jerusalem about Gentiles who become Christians. This is how the cannon of scriptures and the various creeds came to us. The word heresy was given wide currency by Church Father, Irenaeus in his 2nd-century tract titled Against Heresies. He used this pamphlet to describe and discredit his opponents during the early centuries of the Christian community. He described the community's beliefs and doctrines as orthodox (from orthos, which means "straight" or "correct" and doxa, which means "belief". In 325 AD the man children call Santa Clause—Saint Nicholas—violently defended the deity of Christ at the First Council of Nicaea. Join us for five weeks of a fascinating study of our faith and beliefs.
